Mid-Atlantic Crossroads: Advanced Internetworking for Research and Education
What is MAX?
MAX, or Mid-Atlantic Crossroads, is a gigapop organization founded by
Georgetown University,
George Washington University, and the
University of Maryland. Dedicated to developing programs that provide advanced networks and information services to Maryland, Virginia, and D.C., MAX is a leader in facilitating education and research and solving technical and management issues related to high-performance networks. These advanced networks include National Science Foundation's vBNS network, the Department of Energy's ESnet, and the Internet2 Project's Abilene network.
MAX is currently organized around two initiatives: research, where prototypes are funded and developed, and production, where services are provided to member organizations.
MAX's proximity to D.C. provides it the opportunity and advantage to collaborate with federal agencies, labs, non-profit organizations, universities, libraries, and technology and information service providers in the Middle Atlantic States.
The MAX mission is to provide a high performance network to enable the development of broadband applications and to expand the geographic influence of MAX through peering agreements with other organizations. MAX also ensures that innovative telecommunication technology is available to federal agencies and private non-profit sectors and organizes meetings to discuss new advances that will help keep the Mid-Atlantic region in the forefront of networking.
